The French Connection
The first-ever release of the full, conceived and composed Ellis score for this iconic 1970 crime drama that starred Gene Hackman and Richard Rey as hardworking cops tackling a drug ring. While the film’s director William Friedkin is rightly lauded for his peerless technique during the movie’s famous car chase sequence, it is the score that makes it seem so real and believable. A dissonant, jazzy and experimental work that nonetheless fits snugly alongside cutting-edge '70s crime scores by Jerry Goldsmith, Lalo Schifrin and others, this set presents Ellis’s music in its entirety (with 20 minutes of deleted cues restored), augmented with his complete underscore for the 1975 sequel directed by John Frankenheimer. This is 75 minutes of prime '70s police scoring, both truly experimental and accessible.
