Tyrone Smith Is a Candidate For Activation

Despite missing all of August with an avulsion fracture in his left knee, Dallas Cowboys offensive tackle Tyron Smith is a candidate for activation on Sunday. Smith is expected to be available to practice this week, and he will have 21 days to get back to game shape before the Cowboys' 53-man roster is set.

While Smith has been trending toward a return to practice in recent weeks, his timetable remains in doubt. The Cowboys have not cleared the 13-game barrier since the 2015 season, and coach Mike McCarthy could want to keep him on the sideline for a few more weeks. But Smith is likely to return to action this season, and he could see a larger role on the defensive line.

Smith was one of the drivers of the Cowboys' three rushing titles in five seasons. He was also an All-Decade tackle in the 2010s. In his first season, Smith played special teams and recorded five tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss. He was then added to the team's roster after walk-on tryouts. His first game action was against Syracuse, and he recorded a solo tackle and a kickoff return.

In the first eight games of the season, the Cowboys' starting five has been one of the best in the NFL, allowing only six sacks and seven pressures. But if Smith is to return, the Cowboys will need to figure out the best way to occupy their left tackle position. They have Tyler Smith, who was supposed to be the Cowboys' left guard, but has spent most of his time working at left tackle.

Until Smith is back, Tyrone Smith Connor McGovern will be the Cowboys' left guard. But if Smith is able to play, the Cowboys may decide to move Tyler to the left tackle spot. If he does, he would become the Cowboys' primary left tackle fill-in, with veteran Jason Peters already serving as a swing tackle.

Smith is expected to return in December, and the Cowboys will have a decision to make on how they will occupy their left tackle position. They have a few intriguing options for that period of the season, including switching between Tyler Smith and Connor McGovern, as well as reverting to a traditional front. They might also opt to use their rookie first-round pick, Tyron Smith, instead of Connor McGovern.

The Dallas Cowboys are coming off a 7-3 start, and are just one game away from a bye in Week 9. They are also on the cusp of being ranked in the top 10 in the NFL, and their 6-2 record heading into the bye should put them in a good position to start the postseason.

If Smith is able to return this season, he will be one of the most valuable players in the NFL. He was an All-Decade tackle in the 2010s, and has eight Pro Bowl nods to his credit. He is a fearless advocate for the Dallas Cowboys, and is well-regarded as a player who can adapt to different situations.
