SEO may target different kinds of search, including image search, video search, academic search, news search, and the search engine industry-specific vertical.

Optimizing a website may involve editing its content, add content, and modify HTML and associated coding to both increase its relevance to specific keywords and barriers to remove to the indexing activities of search engines such as Google, Yahoo, etc. [citation needed] Promoting a site to increase the number of backlinks, or links inbound, is another SEO tactic. In May 2015, mobile search has surpassed desktop search.

As an Internet marketing strategy, SEO considers how search engines work, computer algorithms programmed that search engine behavior to dictate what people search for, the search term actual or keywords typed into search engines and which search engines are preferred by viewers targeted them. SEO done for the website will receive more visitors from the search engine ranking of the website higher in search engine results page (SERP). The visitor can then be converted into customers.

SEO is different from a local search engine optimization in that the latter is focused on optimizing business online presence so that web pages are displayed by search engines when users enter a local search for products or services. Former even more focused on national or international search.

Webmasters and content providers began optimizing sites for search engines in the mid-1990s, as the first search engines were cataloging the early Web. Initially, all a webmaster needed to submit the address of the page, or URL, to the various engines which would send a "spider" to "crawl" that page, extract links to other pages from it, and return information found on the page into the process indexed. The involves a search engine spider downloading a page and store it in the server's own search engine. A second program, known as an indexer, extracts information about the page, such as the words it contains, where they are located, and weight for specific words, and all links the page contains. All this information is then placed into a scheduler for crawling at a later date.
